 Taxes

Property taxes are billed in two installments with due dates on September 1st and December 20th.  The first billing is based on half of the previous year’s total tax assessment.  The second billing is based on the current assessed value of the property at the current millage rate less the amount collected on the first installment billing.  Since the millage rate is actually set in October, the second billing will include both adjustments in property value and millage rate changes.

Interest is charged at the rate of 1% per month on all delinquent tax bills.  A one time 10% penalty is added to unpaid bills 90 days after the December 20th due date.  Delinquent notices are mailed each January.  If the bill remains unpaid, a lien (FiFa) is placed on the property at the Sumter County Courthouse.  Each April, the City publishes a list of all unpaid taxes by property owner in its legal organ, The Americus Times Recorder.  The City then begins legal proceedings, including the sale of property, to satisfy delinquent taxes.
